Fact: Domestic partnership recognition
is sought in places where full marriage rights are seen as currently
unattainable. But even if there is any "hammering", people have a right
to do that. Civil rights activists, gay and straight, can't 'push'
citizens and legislators to cast specific votes. Those votes are choices
made in response to personal conscience. Either you believe people have
the right to create their own state laws, or you believe in tyranny.
And if you believe citizens don't have the right to make marriage more
inclusive, then you must also believe that citizens don't have the right
to make it more exclusive.
On May 8, 2012 North Carolinians will vote 'for' or 'against' amending the State Constitution. The proposed amendment would prevent our state from ever legalizing civil unions and domestic partnerships for any couples, and would give our state's current law against same-sex marriage constitutional permanence. This blog is a response to many of the false arguments and unfounded concerns of those who support this amendment.
